The Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders Inc. (PSOD)-Cebu Chapter hosted a seminar on proper body positioning and management of body posture problems at the Sacred Heart Center, Cebu City last July 20, 2016. A total of 35 parents, caregivers, physical therapy and occupational therapy interns attended the event. Aside from parents of children with rare disease, particularly Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) or “Brittle Bone disease”, the event was also opened to parents of children with cerebral palsy.
The activity “Shaping up our Kids’ Bodies for the Better” which was timely held for the observance of National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week – an annual event held every third week of July, aims to provide parents and caregivers with an introduction to proper positioning of the body in the lying position, identify risk factors that can lead to abnormal body shape and provide access to home management for body posture problems. The activity was initiated by Dr. Barbra Charina Cavan, a pediatrician and geneticist and Ms. Chris Ruedas.
The program started with the invocation led by PSOD member and OI patient Ms. Marites Lazarte and the opening remarks given by Mrs. Ann Mantos, PSOD Cebu Parent Support Group Head. The main lecture for the seminar was presented by Ms. Gail Russel, an occupational therapist from the United Kingdom. An open forum followed the lecture with PSOD-member parent Mrs. Nadia Merced as moderator. Also present during the seminar was Dr. Ferdiliza Garcia, a licensed intermediate wheelchair assessor.
The second part of the seminar is scheduled on July 30.# RPascual, JJFrancisco
